FOR FUTURE OCEAN EXPLORATION
In the past, subsea systems were deployed for short missions and the equipment was recovered for maintenance and overhauled by a crew on a mothership.
Today’s ocean technology looks towards autonomous and remotely operated equipment, left for months or years without maintenance.
The three biggest challenges of deploying high-reliability systems in the ocean include:
HYDROSPACE Group is uniquely positioned to respond to these technical issues because it draws on thirty years of experience in spaceflight systems and manned submersibles technology. Operating equipment in harsh subsea or outer space environment requires a focus on safety and reliability through advanced systems engineering. Our specialty is producing reliable motion on remote vehicles.
Traditionally, there are two principal energy sources to produce motion in the subsea world: Hydraulic and Electromagnetic. Hydraulic power provides high-power densities for articulated components (motors, robotic arms, and actuation systems) but these produce a single point of failure–a liability in systems that must survive at depth for long durations.
Electro-mechanical systems are de-facto standard technologies in spaceflight, providing a wide range of utility services, redundancies, reliability, and controls. Deep sea resident vehicles demand the same expert engineering and system design to meet such extreme reliability requirements.
Hydrospace Group has in-house expertise in electromagnetic design; specialists in electric DC motor design, control electronics and electrical system engineering for battery power systems. Hydrospace provides bespoke and semi standard designs for electromagnetic devices, from propulsion motors, torque motors, winch systems, rotary and linear actuators and pointing mechanisms. These are available in high-reliability designs from battery or shore-based power systems from 24V-800VDC.
It is important that the motors be matched and designed to the power system/battery and hand-in-hand with the electronic controls. These can be simple impedance matching requirements between battery and loads and can involve a full spectrum of backup, redundancy and fault tolerance strategies. The spectrum of considerations for high reliability systems is wide and is at the root of the engineering knowledge and technology at Hydrospace Group.
